  • Comfort Station Logan Square (map)

Estación Brutalisima is a three-night showcase of Chicago's raw and loud, heavy and fast Latinx rock scene. In contrast to the hush and intimate music series that Comfort Station is known for, Estación Brutalisima will use and distort the acoustic tranquility of our venue, and our lawn, to bring you face-melting, mosh-dancing, head-banging jams from three of the city's gems of the local music circuit.

Comfort Music: VV Lightbody / The Bridge (Lazro - Abrams - Alvarado)

Homeroom is proud to present Comfort Music on Thursdays in May at Comfort Station where we will pair artists and groups from the city’s (and the world’s) jazz and improvised scene with song-based performers in order to give audiences an opportunity to experience the intimate possibilities to be found in both sound and songform.

V.V. Lightbody
Vivian McConnell performs as V.V. Lightbody. Occasionally termed by her as “Nap Rock,” her songs manage to be both light and airy and rich and dense. She performs here solo in anticipation of the release of her upcoming album “Bathing Peach” in early June.

The Bridge is a network French and American musicians structured around collaborative projects designed exchange, production, and diffusion to build a transatlantic bridge. This iteration of the exchange will feature Daunik Lazro of France (saxophones) performing with Chicago’s Joshua Abrams (double bass) and Lisa Alvarado (harmonium).

Wheat Paste Viaducts (or, simply, “Wheat Paste”) is as much a directive as it is the name of this electronic music and media arts ensemble. The group uses sound and visual art to depict urban dystopia beautified by radical acts of creativity. Deftly navigating improvisation and arrangement, Wheat Paste’s evocative musical compositions shift and unfold with the militant dexterity of free jazz, inducing head-nods with the razor-sharp gravity of boom bap or trip-hop. Not only is the musical experience complimented by the striking imagery and movement of 16mm film from up to three projectors, the group also mixes and samples audio from the film and machine to create fully-immersive experiences for their audiences.

This time he will be accompanied by his own video work. Yon Pinnacle is a moniker of Nathan Tucker who has also recorded in a few duos with that of Joshua Davison. On this occasion he will be performing lovely ambient work on his two lap steel guitars and electronics. He will also be accompanied by enveloping visuals by Claude Abbott.

Invisible Touch : The Works of Johnny Young , Aaron Zarzutski and Andrew Clinkman.

JOHNNY YOUNG, as Bill Meyer writes, "works and lives in Chicago, but when you play his tape II you get the idea that he wants to be somewhere else. It’s not because he plays acoustic guitar; it’s a practical instrument if you want to make music in an apartment building, and the things sound great in rooms with hardwood floors. And it’s not because his playing suggests a more than passing acquaintance with players of the Takoma School; Fahey named his label for a place he had left, not a place he wanted to be, and as much as the guy wrote and talked about his past, he didn’t want to go back there. But check the titles “Boonesborough Trail,” “King Of Rapid River,” and “Going To Pleasant Valley.” That’s half a record devoted to places situated far away. Young plays to transport himself elsewhere, and you too if you’re inclined to keep up. But don’t dally or you might miss out; it’s obvious from the fleetness of his picking that he’s ready to be on his way."

Chicago Guitarist Andrew Clinkman employs glistening chord clusters and zig-zagging lines to generate an auricular terrain that imitates the natural world. Recent recordings include "The Joy of Cooking" available from Lake Paradise Records.

Comfort Music: Tacoma Narrows (Steve Marquette, Macie Stewart, Charlie Kirchen)

Elastic Arts and Comfort Station partner up in October!

MUSIC STARTS AT 7:30. NO ALCOHOL. $5 SUGGESTED DONATION.

In an effort to co-promote the complimentary programming offered at two pinnacles of the Logan Square/Avondale arts scene, Elastic Arts andComfort Station are partnering up for the month of October to co-promote their two respective Thursday-night music series.  For that month, Comfort Music will be curated by Elastic Arts Improvised Music Series coordinator Dave Rempis, and will feature artists playing at Elastic Arts later that evening in alternative and generally more intimate settings.   Better still, one donation will gain entry to both concerts.

With this effort, the two organizations hope to achieve a joint affirmation of a partnership that has only been informal to date, in which many of the same audience members attend both events, and enjoy a leisurely stroll a short distance up Milwaukee Avenue between the two events.   Additionally, they hope that this month-long collaboration will lead to future collaborations between these two great neighborhood organizations.

Temple Music XV (ft. Páciens Trine (MN) & Exael)

The fifteenth Temple Music is here! This does not mean anything, except for the fact that the number fifteen is divisible by five which might please some OCD people. More importantly we will have sound artist Páciens Trine of Minneapolis performing along with Chicago's own Exael.

Páciens Trine (MN)
Páciens Trine of Minneapolis will be constructing explorative and ecstatic sound sculptures for the fifteenth incarnation of Temple Music. His wizardry is displayed by use of sound samples that are intricately spliced, mangled, distorted, and stretched over space and time. He also helps run the Cairn Desk imprint where you can observe his other artistic endeavors taking place.

Exael
A definite force of the Chicago scene, Exael exudes eccentric energy in relation to the idea of techno music. When listening to his recordings ("ACTAEON" released this year through Beer On The Rug), one can imagine it as a mass of fog blowing through heads of a techno show that doesn't seem to have any beginning or end to it. Deep, fogged out, and unrelenting.
