OPENING RECEPTION: Devin Balara 'What did you expect?

Opening reception: July 7th 6p-9pm
Exhibition: July 5th- 31st

This is the opening event for Devin Balara's exhibition in Comfort Station during the month of July 2018.

What did you expect? What more do you want?

Devin Balara’s work pokes at the clumsy and absurd ways nature is deployed and consumed. Growing up in Florida and recently spending much of her time in coastal Michigan, Balara’s work can’t help but lampoon postcard beach culture and gift shop kitsch- objects that make promises they can’t keep. In this exhibition, cartoonish illustrations are inspired by bad omens, mirages, desert island logic, and the outdoors as both picturesque and unruly. Operating in the tall grass between landscape architect and prop comic, Devin teases out new relationships between sculptural forms and the installation space.

Devin Balara holds an MFA in sculpture from Indiana University and a BFA from the University of North Florida. Her work has been most recently exhibited at Ortega Y Gasset Projects in NY, Grounds For Sculpture in NJ, Spring Break Art Fair in NYC, The Wassaic Projects in NY, and DEMO Projects in IL. She is newly based in Chicago and is working for the summer at Ox-Bow School of Art and Artist Residency in Saugatuck, MI.
