I first came across my future marionette at my In-law’s house around 2010. My Father In-Law is an avid collector and had acquired many Talent Products, Inc. marionettes. One in particular caught my eye immediately. It was a Black Americana marionette, named Jambo The Jiver. Having recently seen Bamboozled, by Spike Lee, I was drawn to Jambo and wanted to explore manipulating him as a way to explore ideas and issues around Black Americana items. These Items often revive our collective history of racial injustice and oppression. I wanted, as a black man, to have a sense of control over these types of images and to give him a voice from my perspective, while staying somewhat true to his original intent.
