Ishmael Ali is a guitarist, composer, and improviser based out of Chicago. His work focuses on exploring sound through free jazz, collaborative improvisation, and experimental music. Current projects include a quartet that explores parameter-based improvisation and non-traditional forms, a quartet that draws from the music of Paul Motian, and For The Birds, a sextet that performs compositions based on bird calls.
In addition to performing, Ishmael curates the Autotelic Series, an experimental music series happening on the first Wednesday of every month in Chicago.
