This Belongs in a Time Capsule

What belongs in a time capsule? Inspired by “This Belongs in a Museum”, the weekly social gathering at Chicago area bar Gallery Cabaret, we invite attendees to bring any object of their choice to the gallery. Participants will be selected at random to give a three-minute elevator style pitch for why their object belongs in a time capsule*. We encourage attendees to take this prompt as seriously, ironically, or sarcastically as they wish. The more variety the better! Snacks will be provided. This event will precede the upcoming exhibition Century Safe Chicago, curated by Jessica Cochran and students of the Curatorial Practice course at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which will discuss issues of contemporaneity, including: What does the contemporary moment look like? How can we use mapping and archiving as a way to document this moment? How can the idea of preservation be used to frame issues of ephemerality? Century Safe Chicago opens at Roman Susan Gallery on May 7th, 2016. The event is free; donations are welcome and will go towards the production of our exhibition and to Comfort Station.
*Note: all attendees will keep their objects!
