PUBLIC HOURS - Logan Square Preservation presents: Rapid Transition; Logan Square from Terminal to Subway Stop

PUBLIC HOURS - 11-3pm

September 6-27, 2015
Curated by: Andrew Schneider and David Keel

In September Logan Square Preservation will host an exhibition of unseen vintage images that document the excavation and construction of the Blue Line extension. The images show the demolition of some of the neighborhood’s greatest buildings, the transformation of Milwaukee Avenue into a trench and its first steps towards rebirth after the project was completed.

The construction of the subway beneath Milwaukee Avenue where it runs today was opposed by most merchants at the time who wanted it “anywhere but under Milwaukee.” The 9-month project modernized and extended the Blue Line, which would eventually reach O’Hare Airport, but transform Logan Square in the process.

The show was brought to life with the generous head-lining sponsorship of Liberty Bank for Savings, serving Logan Square since 1898.

Also sponsoring the show is Carolyn Fortman, Realtor, Coldwell
Banker.
