John Foster has been collecting vernacular photography for nearly 20 years and self-taught art for over 30 years. His collection, called “Accidental Mysteries” has been shown in more than 12 museums across the country, including the Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem MA and the International Center of Photography in NYC. Foster has been interviewed and written about in dozens of publications and online journals in the last decade. John’s talk will center on his personal journey in collecting, and how self-taught art became the catalyst for building his important collection of vernacular photography. His talk will also track the emergence of snapshots as the new hot area of collecting it is today. John lives in St. Louis, MO and has worked as an artist, educator and graphic designer.
