Golden Spike Rock Shop: Fossil Talk and Neighborhood Walk with Asa Kaplan

Fossil talk is at noon on Sunday, June 14th
Neighborhood walk is at 3pm on Sunday, June 14th

Join Comfort Station's resident paleontologist Asa Kaplan for a talk and walk through Logan Square as he highlights the neighborhood's geological clues to Chicago's ancient history. From flagstones to reef shoals to catastrophic floods, attendees may find themselves with a new sense of Chicago heritage that physically and figuratively underlies everything we think we know about Chicago. Nearly every building is riddled with accidental remains of Chicago’s ancient past, and Logan Square is no exception. Watch as these fossil remains unfold into a scientific narrative of Chicagoland's story over the last 500 million years. To learn how to decode for yourself, join Asa for an accompanying neighborhood fossil walk at 3pm.

Asa Kaplan is a Logan Square-based naturalist and social entrepreneur focused on gathering community around hyperlocal nature experiences in urban settings. Though more informed by experiences of personal discovery, Asa's formal educational background includes Biology undergraduate (Yale) and Geology graduate work (University of Michigan). Chicagoland works to date include a paleontological building stone tour of the Magnificent Mile, as well as Twitter's first live-tweeted phenology almanac, The @Living_Almanac. Asa also founded the Logan Square International Film Series, and enjoys communal farming at Altgeld Sawyer Corner Farm. Current collaborative projects include an urban nature children's book and a hyperlocal urban foraging mobile app.
